Artists in School Scheme: We are delighted to welcome Aideen Coss to our school starting on April 23rd. she will be working with 4th,5th and 6th and teaching them the art of sewing. This project will take place over 6 weeks and is funded by Laois County Council. Thanks to Ms. Goulding for her work on the application and set – up.
Cumann na mBunscol: Matches are continuing. Thanks to Mr. Reynolds, Ms. Purcell, Maggie and Seamus for all their work. Congratulations to all our pupils (past and present) who are on the O’Moore’s U-14 team. They won the Féile Competition on Saturday and are now on their way to Féile na Gael in June. Congratulations also to Caoimhe who has gained a place on the Cumann na mBunscol Development Panel
Tracksuits/School Uniforms: Our school uniform policy clearly states that the tracksuit  to be worn in school is navy (top and bottoms). This rule is not being adhered to by some of the children in 3rd to 6th. This is not acceptable.
If the  navy tracksuit is not clean etc then wear the regular uniform- there are no exceptions. Parents are asked to co-operate with this rule. Uniforms should also be neat & tidy. Polo shirts should only be worn with tracksuit please.
Headlice: Please check your child’s hair and treat regularly. We have received a complaint from the lower end of the school.
Music: Tin whistle lessons will continue up to June 19th. The cost this term is €10. Please see separate notice.
Swimming: Swimming this year takes place for 4 consecutive days, May 28th, 29th,30th and 31st  in Portarlington Pool.  Swimming is compulsory for all children as it is part of the Curriculum for Physical Education. Every child (unless medically certified) from 1st – 6th will have swimming lessons. The cost of swimming  for 4 days will be €20 per child. This is very heavily subsidised  by your Parents’ Association. A note with further details etc will be sent out in May. We will also need parent volunteers and will be asking them to be Garda Vetted. Please do not send in money until the note is sent home – thank you.
Tours: have being organised for 5th/6th and Infants. Dates to be confirmed for 1st,2nd 3rd & 4th.
Fiver Friday: I am very aware that this last term is costly between tours, music and swimming and so I will set up a “fiver Friday” saving club from April 20th next. If you wish (it is not compulsory) you can pay money towards these expenses every Friday – but only in denominations of €5 please. I hope this will  help.
Standardised Tests: These will take place during the weeks of May 14th & May 21st. If your child is not in school during that time we will test them during the week of June 5th. It is not possible to accommodate any other dates as results need to be the Department of Education by June 8th.
New i-pads and laptops have been purchased for the school. This is a considerable investment and will be of great benefit to the school. It was funded by the Department IT Grants, Board of Management and the Parents’ Association. Thanks to Carol McGrath for all her financial work and Mr. Reynolds for setting these up.
Internet Safety is never far from the news so it is in all of our interests to learn about it. On May 1st the children from 2nd – 6th will learn about internet safety. After school the teachers and SNAs will receive training and that evening parents are invited to an information meeting. Please mark this date in your diary and attend the session. Details will follow.
