Junior and Senior Infants 2018/2019
September-October 2018
We were very busy in the first two months of the school year! In September, we learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We then got to look after 5 caterpillars in our classroom over the course of a month so that we could watch the life cycle for ourselves. We watched our caterpillars get bigger and bigger before all 5 eventually went into a chrysalis. A few weeks later we were delighted when 5 beautiful painted lady butterflies emerged from each chrysalis. We were sad to see them go but we really enjoyed watching the entire process. Our butterflies were very friendly when we did release them! Check out our photos below to see for yourselves.
We had lots of fun making a leaf pile as part of Green Schools.
Have a look at some of our artwork which we are very proud of.
November-December 2018
To celebrate science week which ran from November 11th-18th, we carried out an experiment called dancing raisins. We worked together in small groups to predict what would happen when we first put raisins into water and then put some into 7up. We watched as they sank straight away in the water, but were amazed when we put them into the 7up as they danced up and down!
Here we are using cotton buds to create some pictures in art. This technique is called pointillism.
Did you know that oil is less dense than water, meaning that oil will always sit on top of water if the two are poured into the one container? Well that's what we discovered when we carried out an experiment to make lava lamps. We added some food coloring just so we could see what was happening and dropped in some alka- seltzer tablets. This caused the oil to move up and down just like a lava lamp. We were all very impressed!
It's the most wonderful time of the year!
We got our Christmas tree up just in time for the Toy Show! We are all so excited to watch it!

Busy at work creating our winter snowmen!
Our Christmas play took place on December 13th in the Church here in Rosenallis. Everyone agreed that we all did a super job! Have a look at some of our rehearsal pictures below.
Our naughty elf Twinkletoes joined us in December! Check out some of the mischief he got up to in our classroom.
From Miss Kelly and the junior and senior infants we would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas. See you all in 2019!
January-February 2019
We would firstly like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We have all come back to school with plenty of energy and we have lots of things to look forward to over the next few months! Our Aistear theme for January is 'The Doctors Surgery'. We have learned lots of new words such as: prescription, chemist, antibiotics, receptionist and stethoscope! Here we are in our groups one day having lots of fun.
We created some lovely art pieces using different coloured chalk. It got very messy but thankfully we are all very helpful when it comes to cleaning up!
As part of SSE, Rosenallis NS has chosen to focus on geography; nature in particular. Every room in the school will learn about 3 new plants and 3 new animals found in Ireland every year. The first flower that we learned about was the daisy. We learned that:
1) It is a wild flower that appears from spring.
2) It is like a human in the sense that all the petals close in at night but 'wake up' and spread out in daylight.
3) It is a perennial flower, meaning seeds are not required for it to grow.
4) The Irish word for daisy is 'nóinín'.
We all got the chance to display some of these facts about the daisy in our best handwriting, before creating the flower using crepe paper in our art lesson. See below for samples of our wonderful work.

Having fun in PE!
We learned about the robin as part of SSE. We learned the following facts:
1) The Irish word for the robin is 'An Spideog'.
2) It is a bird that can live in Ireland all year round; it does not need to migrate to warmer countries.
3) It visits bird tables in winter where it will eat seeds and nuts.
4) In summer it eats spiders and small caterpillars to name but a few.
5) Robins are not born with their distinctive red feathers. The feathers turn this colour when the robin is an adult.
We all wrote lovely reports about the robin, before creating them in art using paint and paper plates.

Participating in 'Rock Your Socks' day which marked World Down Syndrome Day on the 31st of March
Andy Warhol inspired pop-art!
Procedural Writing- How to make rice krispie buns. We then were lucky enough to actually get to make them in school! Some of us liked decorating them with sprinkles too!

Sponge painting in art
Congratulations to our three winners in the Credit Union Art Competition!
We were all very excited to cast our votes in the very first Student Council election here in Rosenallis NS!
Heritage in Schools with Barbara Sullivan. We had lots of fun searching the school grounds for ladybirds, daisies, dandelions, clover, hedgehogs, buttercups, robins, rabbits and holly. Thank you Barbara for a very enjoyable morning.
We learned about the dandelion and the horse chestnut tree as part of SSE.
The Dandelion
1. The dandelion is a wild flower found in grass, bushes and hedges.
2. It appears with yellow heads first before turning into white seed heads.
3. Mowing dandelions will not kill them as they have very long roots.
4. Bees and other insects love dandelions.
The Horse Chestnut Tree
1. It is a tree that is found all over Ireland.
2. In spring, it has brown buds.
3. In summer, it has lovely white flowers that some people think look like the shape of a candle.
4. In autumn, green prickly fruits grow on it and they contain conkers.

Having fun in PE doing gymnastics
We learned the following about the hedgehog:

Showing off our acting skills in drama by acting out some of our favourite fairy tales
Predicting if objects will sink or float in science
We grew our own cress in science. We discovered that all seeds needed water and sunlight to grow.
We learned all about ladybirds. We learned that:
1. They eat greenflies.
2. They are brightly coloured, not all of them are red and black.
3. They can be poisonous to birds.
4. They hibernate in winter.
We then made some clay ladybirds to join our hedgehogs!
